A Toast To Overwatch

OK, I swear not everything I do has to do with geeky cocktails! I’m again collaborating on Drunkenwatch, though I know that’s all I’ve been posting lately! I have so many ideas for posts but not enough time to do them, so for now this series is taking priority.

This week’s installment is a champagne toast to Overwatch’s 1 year anniversary! We didn’t make up a drink, and instead are toasting using the classic champagne cocktail, Kir Speciale. I’ll post the recipe below if you don’t know how to make it :)

This week we’re featuring the usual squad of Skowalz, AcornBandit, silenced_knight, with special guest streamer Starbuck!

The whole reason I started playing Overwatch was to play DVa (who isn’t even my main anymore), so it’s about time we featured a DVa-themed post. To toast with us and make a Kir Speciale:

You will need (makes 1):
  • Champagne
  • Blackcurrant liqueur (Creme de Cassis)
  • Triple Sec (just a splash)
  • Raspberries or blackberries (for garnish)

Not pictured: we forgot to add the berries to the top for a little extra flair! Epic fail. They really make the drink!

Directions:
  • Pour champagne into a flute, 3/4 full
  • Drizzle in the blackcurrant liquor and triple sec
  • Add a few raspberries/blackberries to the top
  • Wait for the ingredients to settle, and enjoy!

Sam got me this cute DVa jacket for my birthday, so I took the opportunity to throw together a fun casual cosplay – nothing serious, and I already owned the shirt and wig. DVa is fun to cosplay!

And as a final side note to Overwatch: THANK YOU for giving me tons of art, cosplay, and blog post ideas this past year…I’m looking forward to lots of creative ideas in the upcoming year!

Geeky Cocktail | Widow’s Kiss

Another Friday, another installment of Overwatch-themed geeky cocktails! I’m again collaborating on Drunkenwatch with my stream friends Skowalz, AcornBandit, and silenced_knight. This week features silenced’s main, Widomaker in “Widow’s Kiss”. This fun purple drink is dark and mysterious like Widow, and uses some french liqueurs to match her origin.

If you want to go really fancy, add some salt to the rim for when someone on your team picks widowmaker (unless its silenced_knight). s( ^ ‿ ^)-b

As always, if you make this drink, let me know! I’d love to hear or see how it turned out.

Geeky Cocktail | Overwatch Sound Berrier

Tonight I’ll be playing overwatch drunkenwatch with my cool Twitch friends, Skowalz, AcornBandit, and silenced_knight. In honor of Overwatch, we created a fun little cocktail for the theme: Sound Berrier, featuring my main, Lucio!

Kyla Is Inspired | Overwatch Sound Berrier Cocktail

You will need (makes 1):
  • 2 shots raspberry vodka
  • 1/2 shot Midori melon liquor
  • Seltzer (I used blueberry flavor)
  • Berries of your choosing (I like blueberries and blackberries for color contrast)
  • Splash of simple syrup or white cranberry juice for added sweetness
  • Ice
Directions:
  • Add ice to glasses
  • Pour your vodka and midori
  • Add seltzer until your glass is almost full
  • For added sweetness, top your drink off with either simple syrup or white cranberry juice
  • Add in your berries
  • Mix everything well with a stir stick
  • Enjoy – you are now ready to activate the sound berrier!

Note: This recipe mild in flavor, so up the amount of midori or juice (or vodka!) if you like an extra punch.

Also note: You get extra points if you get play of the game while drinking this! ;)

If you end up making this drink at home, let me know in the comments! I’d love to hear if you enjoyed it.

Cosplay Step-By-Step | Mercy Wig

Kyla Is Inspired | Mercy Wig Step-By-Step

This weekend, I spent my entire Saturday documenting styling my Mercy wig. Yikes. I’ve cosplayed 2 characters in the past with ponytail wigs, and after those two horrible experiences I vowed I would never cosplay a character with a ponytail again. And I didn’t – for almost three years! So I found it slightly ironic that I was once again at the mercy (heh) of styling another ponytail. I used an Arda Jeannie in ash blonde.

Since there weren’t a lot of tutorials out there (especially for total wig styling noobs like myself), I figured I’d document my progress and hope that someone might find it useful! I apologize in advance for the poor lighting (and my pajama top, ha!)

Kyla Is Inspired | Mercy Wig Step-By-Step
MAKING THE PONYTAIL 1:
This was honestly the part that took the longest – 5 whole hours. During which I had a breakdown, thinking I’d never be able to do this. But I pushed through! I’m sure I’m an anomaly and this wouldn’t take as long for someone else.

I took out the ponytail that came pre-packaged and brushed the entire thing out. It’s recommended to have a friend help you gather the hair back into a ponytail on your head but I did it myself. It took 4 different tries before settling on the height of the ponytail pictured above. As you can see, it’s still a little “baggy” at the bottom but after 5 hours…yeah, I settled. I secured the ponytail with 5 hair elastics.

I knew I needed some extra volume in the ponytail for the spikes, so I added 6 extra wefts, 4″ wide. I tied them in via elastic, knowing that the elastic and tops of the wefts would be covered later on with a large black fabric band.

MAKING THE PONYTAIL 2:
Mercy’s back ponytail comes to a point in the back with three little spikes at top. Using small elastics, I sectioned the hair into where the spikes would go.

To make a spike, flatten the section of hair and snip the hair into a point. I used got2b ultra glued gel to gel the hair into a spike and set it by using a hair dryer. I repeated this basic process until all the spikes were made. For the top 3 spikes I added a little drop of tacky glue to keep the points extra sharp.

BANGS PART 1:
I started out with the side of Mercy’s bangs with the least amount of hair, since her bangs intimidated me ^^ I knew I wanted a bit of hair on the side to cover up where my hairline might show (damn being a thick-haired brunette). To do this, I sewed two wefts to the inside of the wig, right at the hairline. I trimmed them into a point, used the got2be gel, and set with heat.

Kyla Is Inspired | Mercy Wig Step-By-Step
BANGS PART 2:
I sectioned most of the bangs over to her right side to use for the larger side of the bangs, and kept a smaller piece to use on the left side. Starting with the “under” layer of the bangs, I started teasing the hair, pretty much with no goal as to how I’d achieve her gravity-defying bangs. I used the hair dryer to coax the roots up and ended up cutting up a paper towel tube to use as a guide for the curl. Then I used hairspray to set the curls, and started to tease some more. And more. Really, I just kept teasing and using heat to get the bangs to lay around the tube.

Kyla Is Inspired | Mercy Wig Step-By-Step
BANGS PART 3:
I repeated the above process with the rest of the hair that I’d sectioned off. I tried really hard here to add even more volume to the back of the ponytail so it would “float” above the front section. Not sure if I achieved it but I did use a lot of hairspray…this section was then trimmed shorter and turned into a spike.

Kyla Is Inspired | Mercy Wig Step-By-Step

And there we have it! I still have some work to do taming flyaways and getting rid of hairspray frizz but the overall shape is there. I’m so proud of it! I keep waffling back and forth between making the black neck cover in the back (since I’m doing a casual cosplay) to cover up my hairs that are showing. Do you have any tips for covering those up? I’m not too sure what to do…

Anyway, I hope this tutorial helps! If you use it, I’d love to know! Let me know :)

What I Wore | Nerf This!

If you’ve been seeing my posts over the past few weeks, you’ll know this isn’t my first time posting something related to the game Overwatch, though it is my first outfit post!

I picked up both the Nerf This! tee and the bunny tights at Connecticon last month, and I’ve really been loving the combo together. (I did get asked on instagram though, and I’m so sorry but I can’t remember the vendor who sold this :< ) DVa is my favorite character to play (& Lucio!), and she’s so adorable, too. This inspired outfit is a lot of fun to wear, and the bunny tights really pulled it together for me.
